Your College Prep Timeline

Stay Ahead by Planning Ahead

August–September

  • Applications Open: Most applications (including LSU, UNO, ULL, Southern, and others) open August 1.
  • Retake ACT/SAT: If you want to improve your score, sign up for a fall test date.

October

  • Complete the FAFSA:
    • The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form that determines how much federal, state, and school-based financial aid you qualify for.
    • It typically opens in October each year, and the sooner you apply, the better your chances at grants, work-study, and state aid like TOPS.
    • You’ll need your Social Security number, parent/guardian tax information, and a list of colleges you’re applying to.
  • Apply to Colleges: Many Louisiana schools have rolling admissions, but applying early helps you qualify for housing and scholarships.

November–January

  • Scholarship Season: Apply for TOPS (Tuition Opportunity Program for Students), local community scholarships, and national opportunities.
  • Submit Applications: Try to finish before winter break so you don’t miss deadlines.

February–March

  • Check Your Status: Log in to your college and FAFSA portals to see if schools need additional documents (like transcripts, test scores, or FAFSA verification forms).

April

  • Admission Decisions: Most schools notify students by March or April. Compare acceptance letters and financial aid packages carefully.
  • Make Your Decision: Commit to your school by May 1 (National College Decision Day).

May–August

  • Finalize Financial Aid: Accept your award, complete any verification, and set up payment plans if needed.
  • Register for Orientation: Louisiana colleges typically host summer orientation programs.
  • Prepare to Enroll: Submit housing deposits, register for classes, and get ready for your first semester.
